The Gil Kane Punch of the Week 37: The Good Old One, Two, Three!

Since I've been going to the Green Lantern well a little too often, I decided to switch things up and use a Robin panel, this from "My Place in the Sun," in Detective Comics 402 (Aug. 1970; rpt. in Showcase Presents Robin the Boy Wonder vol. 1), written by Mike Friedrich and inked by Vince Colletta:


It turns out, Robin punches the wrong guy, leading the Boy Wonder to undergo some deep soul searching:

This panel proves that college kids haven't changed that much since 1970. Heck, my students are still talking about Law and Order, though they prefer NCIS for some reason.

The last panel also demonstrates yet another Gil Kane signature technique: the floating head montage. When I run out of Gil Kane punches, which hopefully will be never, I'm going to switch this series to "The Gil Kane Floating Heads of the Week."

The Gil Kane Punch of the Week 31: Taste Fisted Flesh!

As I mentioned the other day, I've really dropped the ball the last couple of weeks on the Gil Kane punches, so I'm going to try to do some catch-up here with this glorious page from Warlock 3 (Dec. 1972), written by Mike Friedrich and inked by Tom Sutton.



Friedrich's dialogue on this whole page is just fantastic--it seems written specifically to match the dynamic action of Gil Kane's style. I know the next time I punch somebody, I'm going to open with "Taste fisted flesh and feel defeat drip down your throat!"

The Gil Kane Punch of the Week 28: My Presence Has Been Announced!

This week's Gil Kane punch comes from Detective Comics 390 (Aug. 1969; reprinted in Showcase Presents: Robin the Boy Wonder Vol. 1), in a story titled, "Countdown to Chaos," written by Mike Friedrich and inked by Murphy Anderson.

During this period, Robin had a backup series in Detective, usually alternating with Batgirl. In this particular story, young Dick Grayson and his intrepid colleagues at the Gotham High Owl uncover some corruption involving a new school annex and a teachers' strike. The bullies that Robin takes out are really mob enforcers disguised as a gang from a rival high school, but Robin sees through their disguise due to the gang's suspicious ability to grow facial hair.

This story is pretty punch-a-rific, so you'll probably see it come up again in a future entry.
